Scrub data once, use everywhere

Patrick RyanPatrick Ryan

Essential to content creation in investment banking is the ability to personalize numbers. This may mean overriding a single value, redefining a calculation, adding a brand new metric or a variety of other customizations that together, form part of the unique insight and perspective a bank—and banker—brings to a project.

When designing Pellucid, we wanted a platform that would address all of these challenges and offer additional benefits that bankers can’t readily achieve in Excel. Such as a better way to reuse numbers instead of having to scrub the same data set over and over; a way to centralize data so that everyone on the same product, in the same group, or in the same organization, can work from the same set of numbers; and lastly, a way for other people in the firm to trace any number from a presentation back to its original source or author.

With this set of ambitions in mind, we’re about to release a few Data Hub functions that deliver on all of these goals (and a few more!), but I want to focus on one of the most common needs: overriding a value. Here’s how it can be done in the Data Hub.

Scrubbing numbers

The Data Hub connects to any market provider and the ingested numbers can be updated to reflect your personal preferences in the Definitions section of the Data Hub. First, enter a subject company, set your data parameters, and the table will populate with numbers.

Switching to scrub mode, you can simply type a new value in a cell, or copy and paste new values into multiple cells at once and hit enter. You can also add notes with a reason for the change and add any reference materials.

Auditing numbers

Sometimes you want to dig into the numbers before making any changes. In the Audit mode, you can click on any value and its definition window will open. This shows where the number originated, how it is defined and all other relevant details. If you decide you need to change the value, you can do so here and all edits will be saved and automatically applied to any dependent calculations and created content.

Reviewing override details in Pellucid's Data Hub

All overrides made in the Data Hub (in either scrub or audit mode) are saved and will be automatically applied to any dependent calculations or content created in Pellucid. Also, you can download any data, so you scrub values once and use them everywhere.

Temporary edits

What if you don’t want to permanently store an override? One-time data edits can be applied via the content details page of chart in the Library. All you need to do is select the content item you want to create, enter your company and any peers, select any appearance options and then generate data files for the item.

A grid of cells will open. Just type the new value directly into the cell and hit save. Alternatively, you can choose to download the whole set of data as a CSV, make any edits, and upload the CSV with your changes. When ready, hit order and your changes will be applied to that content item only.

We’re constantly working on ways to make the Data Hub more seamless, more powerful, and more flexible. I’d love to hear what you would like solved when it comes to overriding values, scrubbing numbers, or any other data management challenges you may have. Email me at
